  • 7 Common Email Marketing Mistakes

Email marketing can be one of the most beneficial ways to keep an open line of communication with previous customers or clients. Advances in technology mean they can also be a huge resource for gaining potential customers as well! E-commerce sites are using email marketing to automatically target customers who begin to buy products but never actually complete the purchase, for instance.

You wouldn’t leave a good friend’s house without some way to reach out to them later. Right? Therefore, why would you let customers walk into your store or visit your website without providing a way to contact them later? It can be an excellent way to up-sell them on products or remind them of other services you provide.

While email marketing is a very important aspect of any marketing strategy, it’s only effective if done correctly. Here are some of the most common email marketing mistakes we see from emails we’ve received.

    1. A Weak Subject Line

The subject line is the first content from your email that customers or potential clients will see. And it very well could be the last. Your subject line will often determine if they actually open your email to view the rest of your content. It should be well thought out , use proper grammar & spelling, as well as reflect the actual content of the email. Nothing is more frustrating than reading an intriguing subject line and opening the email only to find that nothing in the email refers to it!

    2. Not Optimizing Your Emails for Mobile

This can be one of the most detrimental mistakes of your email marketing strategy. The vast majority of users will now open your email from a mobile device. 66% of all emails opened in the US were opened on a smartphone or tablet. If your design doesn’t load correctly or requires a lot of dragging and zooming they are likely to click right back out, letting your valuable content go without eye balls. A huge mistake we see is often using one, large image for your email contents. This is bad for many reasons. Should images not load in their email client, your entire message isn’t conveyed to the user. This method also doesn’t allow text and other elements to size themselves according to the screen and device. Images and other elements can have a huge impact on your email marketing, but must be used with caution and appropriately!

    3. Ignoring Your Analytics

If the first step is writing the content to send, the next step would be analyzing the results of said content. It’s important to ensure you’re not having a large influx of unsubscribers and to see if your content is resonating with your audience. A large number of unsubscribers is a pretty good sign that you should reconsider the frequency of emails being sent out or how you’re attaining your list. A low click-through rate can signal an issue with your call to action. You might try rewording it or moving it to a different section of your email design. Your open rate could indicate which types of subject lines your audience prefers. There is some action to be gleaned from almost every metric available to you. Use these to your advantage to improve the effectiveness of your strategy and see a higher return on your investment.

    4. Sending From A noreply@yourdomain.com

This is a quick way to kill your open rate! Customers or potential clients, in particular, often find this cold, unwelcoming, and uninviting. It’s also very confusing. You’re attempting to open a line of communication with them, yet instantly shut it down. You should always send your emails from a domain that they can reply to and that someone checks frequently. If possible, send from a recognizable name. Even if the emails aren’t designed by yourself, if your name is the one customers would recognize that is who your emails should be sent from. Ultimately, You should treat your email marketing as another way to create a conversation, showcasing your latest products or services while allowing questions from them to clear up any confusion or problems.

    5. Not Using Segmentation

Just segmenting your email list can have a huge impact on conversions! Your audience has different interests just like you or me and we now have the technology to be able to distribute targeted emails to people based on their interests and needs. This could be as simple as asking if they are male or female when they sign up so your clothing company only shows relevant products for them. Or this might include segmenting your email list by location to show pertinent products based on the current season. If your products or services don’t appeal to the user viewing the email, you may begin to lose them over time as they open your emails less and less frequently.

    6. Lacking a Full Subscriber Growth Strategy

You can have the best email campaign in the world but if there is no one to view it your efforts have been wasted. You already have plenty of resources around you to help build your email marketing list! Start by adding email addresses that you’ve collected for your current clients. If you’ve not been collecting emails for your clients, now is the time to start! You could add a sign on the front window of your store or post a sign up link on your social media accounts. (Be sure to take advantage of your personal social connections who might be interested in your products or services as well.) It’s also very important to have a sign up form on your website to catch the organic traffic that is sent there. Possibly the big mistake you can make is buying an email list! These people have no idea who you are and most email systems strongly dislike customers who upload large lists. Overall, slow, organic growth of your list will be the most beneficial to you and show the biggest return on your investment.

    7. Test Your Emails Before Sending

This simple step can save you a lot of embarrassment later! Be sure to send the email to yourself first and view it on both a desktop computer and mobile device to make certain it looks professional and works as expected. Check the links to ensure they take users where they should. Be sure to include pertinent links as well! If you are asking users to buy tickets for an event, be sure to include a link where they can buy tickets. Every email should have some ultimate goal for the user, or a call-to-action. Testing your emails can guarantee that your business looks professional, remains authoritative, and calls your customers to take an action that will can help increase your ROI.

  • What They’re Not Telling You About Snap Maps

As we’re sure you’ve probably seen or read about on the internet at this point, Snapchat recently released a new update that also included a new feature: Snap Maps. The new feature allows you to find your friends, explore the world, and plan an outing or trip on a map featuring caricatures of yourself and friends called Bitmoji. The internet and media have been quick to critique Snapchat, touting the new feature as “dangerous” and “worrying.” While ensuring your privacy is protected is an important responsibility, some of the reports have just been flat out wrong. We’re here to set the record straight and let you decide for yourself.

    1. The feature is opt-in.

Opt-in means no one is automatically sharing their location with the app. The feature is accessed by pinching to zoom out. Upon accessing the feature for the first time Snapchat will prompt you asking if you would like to share your location. You have the option of not sharing your location at all or sharing your location in order to view the map of your friends.

    2. You can ‘ghost’ yourself.

‘Ghosting’ yourself essentially means keeping your location private. It allows the app to use your location in order to provide you with the location of other friends, but does not share your location with anyone. You do not appear on the map. ‘Ghost mode’ once toggled on remains on until switched back off.

    3. You can choose which friends see your location.

If you want to take advantage of the new feature while maintaining some of your privacy you can also choose to share your location with only specific friends. This allows you to take advantage of the feature to see which of your friends are nearby or view snaps from popular locations and events around the world, while not sharing your location with your entire friend’s list.

    4. Your location is only shared with your friends.

While Facebook posts can often by seen by strangers (public posts) or friends of friends (tagged posts), Snap Maps only allows your friends to see your location, if you have opted-in. Many media stories have falsely reported that Snap Maps is viewable by everyone. This is misleading; while it is viewable to every one of your friends the feature is not viewable publicly.

    5. The feature showcases hot spots around town and throughout the world.

The feature curates snaps that have been posted to the ‘our story’ feature to reveal popular events and locations. Is Journey in town for a concert? A heat map will appear above the venue, giving you a glimpse of what’s happening. Scroll across the world to the Eiffel Tower and take a look at history through the eyes of others. This is one of the coolest aspects of the new feature! It allows you to discover events that are happening near you, find nearby friends who might be interested, and plan an adventure.

What are you thoughts on the new Snap Map feature? We’d love to hear your feedback. Have you opted into the feature?

  • 5 Easy Ways to Take Your Facebook Page to the Next Level

Facebook Profile Picture - Marketing1. Properly format your profile photo

Your page’s profile picture is probably the most prominent image of your business or company on the platform! It appears on your page, when you like something as your page, as well as when you comment as your page. Not only should it be sized correctly but it should be your logo. This is one of the easiest, yet often most missed, ways to market your business. Your page is there to help you brand your business. You can’t do that without using your logo! Also, make sure your logo is cropped properly to fit inside a square, which is the shape Facebook uses for its default profile pictures.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider admin_label=”Divider” color=”#ffffff” show_divider=”off” height=”20″ divider_style=”solid” divider_position=”top” hide_on_mobile=”on”] [/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text admin_label=”Cover Photo” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

    2. Use an interesting cover photo.

The cover photo photo of your page is 825×315 pixels of marketing area for your business and it should be thought of as such! The image should be clear and resonate with your audience. Showcase some of your products or display your latest products. Profile pictures no longer overlap this area so it could be a good to include your contact info. Don’t forget to design these for mobile as well! There are plenty of templates out there. Basically, the left and right parts of your photo will be cropped: so think and design for the center.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider admin_label=”Divider” color=”#ffffff” show_divider=”off” height=”20″ divider_style=”solid” divider_position=”top” hide_on_mobile=”on”] [/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text admin_label=”CTA Button” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

Facebook Call to Action Button - Marketing3. Create a call-to-action button.

Facebook offers you a button that displays in prominent locations on desktop as well as mobile, along with multiple call-to-actions to choose from. This is an easy way to entice visitors to learn more by visiting your website, setup an appointment, or download your app. By design, Facebook displays your CTA prominently. Use it to your advantage. This is another free marketing area that is just wasted, should you choose not to use it.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider admin_label=”Divider” color=”#ffffff” show_divider=”off” height=”20″ divider_style=”solid” divider_position=”top” hide_on_mobile=”on”] [/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text admin_label=”FB Category” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

Facebook Business Category - Marketing4. Ensure your business is properly categorized.

This is quite often one of the biggest mistakes new businesses make starting out. Not categorizing your business correctly can jeopardize visitors finding your business online. First, ensure you have the most accurate category for your business. Do a little research on competitors and see what categories they list themselves as. Second, be specific. If you are a pizza shop don’t use restaurant, use pizza place. You’re more likely to appear higher in results for niche searches rather than generalized ones.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider admin_label=”Divider” color=”#ffffff” show_divider=”off” height=”20″ divider_style=”solid” divider_position=”top” hide_on_mobile=”on”] [/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text admin_label=”About Section” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

    5. Make sure your about section is complete, accurate, and up-to-date.

An accurate about section is important for a variety of reasons. One, Google has begun pulling in social data for its search results. Google ranks sites with accurate contact information higher than those who don’t, meaning your contact information should be consistent across your social platforms and web site. Google actually penalizes inaccurate listings. Second, it’s another chance to better explain your services, why you do what you do, and offer others means for people to contact you. All of this turns into more leads and return on your social media investment.

  • 5 Reasons Instagram Stories is Superior to Snapchat Stories

    1.Instagram Stories Provides Analytics

Instagram Stories AnalyticsInstagram Stories’ analytics are important for business owners and marketers alike as it can help show you what your audience is connecting to and engaging with. To be fair, Snapchat does give you data on how many people viewed a snap as well as who viewed it; however, after 24 hours that data is gone.

Instagram keeps how many people viewed a story and more for 14 days, allowing you to gather more data  from your followers. You can filter your stories for the past 14 days by impressions, reach, exits, and replies. If you want to filter the results even more, you can apply an additional filter for the last 24 hours, 7 days, or 14 days. The ability to see when viewers exit is huge! This can help you determine if your daily stories are too long or even what type of content your viewers don’t appreciate. Instagram does currently lack the ability the sort this data.

    2. Stories Can Promote Your Main Profile’s Content

Instagram Stories have the ability to mention other accounts (clicking the username brings up a bubble with the username that will take you straight to their profile page) or even your own. In doing so, stories is an excellent way to appear at the top of your followers’ feeds, showcasing your latest posts, and directing them straight back to your business’ content.

Snapchat has yet to add any sort of tagging feature. There also is no core profile feature to direct users to in order to learn more about your products or services; stories is the snapchat product.

    3. Boomerang

Boomerang was originally a separate app by Instagram that allowed users to record a short 3-second long clip that would repeat itself forward and backwards. It has since been baked into the flagship Instagram app. The effect has become immensely popular on the platform, particularly with millennials.

The effect is very reminiscent of GIFS, which are wildly popular with millennials on Tumblr and have even recently caught the eye of Facebook. With about 90% of Instagram’s user base under 35, it is an excellent platform to capitalize on that demographic. The popular effect is a great way for brands to get creative and produce native content as well!

    4. The Design is More Intuitive and Customizable

Customization Abilities & Text Freedom with Instagram Stories Instagram is a creative community, made up vastly of designers and creators. The tools made available to users reflects this demographic with a large amount of options and customizations. One of the biggest perks is the ability to change text size. No more awkward, hanging words that take up a ton of space. Instagram also gives you the ability to add multiple text layers which has yielded some original text designs for posts. Users have used multiple text layers to create shadows and other effects, for example.

Simple, modern “stickers” allow users to showcase weather conditions, the time, or their location. There are also stickers for the days of the week and holidays; Instagram is constantly updating the collection to choose from. They also have multiple pen tools that allow you to draw or write in different styles. There is a thin marker style, a thicker, highlighter line with a slight opacity, as well as a line with a neon, outer glow. The ability to use all of these styles with any color you can imagine rounds out the customization options in Instagram.

    5. Instagram Stories’ Filters

Instagram’s stellar filter options not only make posting fun but they also can make your photos look stunning! With filters that add gradient, color overlays, or increase brightness, or decrease noise, the filters are specifically designed to make photos or videos look great. They provide the finishing, professional touch, giving you the same freedom to edit your photos or videos as you would in the main app.

While snapchat’s main focus has been on geofilters and the use of facial recognition to overlay graphics onto your face or videos, Instagram focuses on the creative process of posting: choosing a subject and unique angle and then selecting one of Instagram’s several filters to polish your media before posting. Instagram Stories is ramping up it competitive offerings against snapchat by launching their own geofilters. While currently only available in select cities, the feature is sure to roll out more broadly very soon.
